4 Deadly Mistakes Most Network Marketing Amateurs Make and a Few Simple Strategies to Fix Them
I was actually repelling potential customers and distributors!
Here is the skinny… You could be “That person everyone is avoiding” and not even know it!
Before we get into that, I want to tell you my story.
When I was first exposed to the home based business arena with my company, I was SO excited! I signed up right away, started telling people all about it, and got my first party on the books! I LOVED it!
Within the first 3 months, I hit 4 figures a month and had 7 people on my team. I was off to a fast start.
Everyone wanted to know what I was doing.
I wasn’t running all over the place recruiting, but many people actually came to me asking me about what I was doing. I told them and they were so excited, they wanted to join too. I told them my story and my “why”, they told me theirs. Many of them said they wanted to because they too were dead broke.
Being the giver I am, I desperately wanted to help them change their financial situation and get them in this life changing business. I knew it was their opportunity to change their lives and they even seemed to get it too.
But they had no money to get started.
So, I helped some of them pay for their enrollment kits to get them started or gave them “signing bonuses”.
I had seen what this business had done for others in their situation and heard of other leaders doing the same thing, so I thought why not me too? I guess that’s how you do things in this biz.
I ended up spending more money than I was making trying to get ahead and to the top of the organization as fast as possible.
This wasn’t anyone’s fault. This was business.
I knew the risk. They were friends and I wanted to help them out in life. And I was in a position to do just that.
The problem was I wasn’t duplicating myself with my team.
I thought they’d work the biz “just like me”.
I knew there were people that made it big within home based businesses.
I had read the stories. Heard their recorded calls.
When I hit the wall, like most home based business people do, I was really frustrated, and stayed that way for a couple of months until I went searching for new strategies that would work for me.
The initial problem was I had talked to all of my warm market, plastered my Facebook with my products and opportunity, sent every Facebook friend the same message my upline was using, and prospected everyone I met.
I needed more leads, more quality people to look at what I was doing.
Don’t get me wrong the old way of networking still works, it is just a TON of work and it is slooooooww.
The other problem was my upline at the time had absolutely no idea how to train for online business building.
Still I thought, “I can do that” and I refused to stop until I built myself a huge business.
Another problem was none of the leaders were professionally trained or had any specialized marketing skills. So, unfortunately, that duplicated and I struggled, trying all the old ways, talking to people one-on-one, and spamming people on social media. I felt like I was throwing a lot of mud at the wall and hoping someone (or something) stuck.

At this point, all my close friends were avoiding me, even though they had no idea what it was.
I was “that friend” with this crazy vision, talking about “we’re first”, and throwing up all over people with my excitement!
You know, all the verbal vomit, non-stop talking about “this once in a lifetime opportunity” and “the next Billion dollar company” I was even taking it personal when they weren’t hearing me, and I thought THEY were the crazy ones!
I finally figured out that I needed to do something different. I knew that I had to get around the best of the best high-end professionals to learn what they knew.
I needed to gain specialized skills FAST if I was going to “make it” in Home Business.
It didn’t matter that my company was going to be “in momentum”, because I wasn’t, and when you’re doing it wrong, it makes you crazy!
I searched out the legends. The ones making it big time and everyone knew their name. I bought all their trainings, signed up for webinars, read their books, and went to their events. I found out that growth was gonna be out of my comfort zone but game-changing, and I learned a ton.
Guess what they are doing?
I noticed that the old school ways were still being taught, but most leaders were still not leveraging with the internet.
Which was completely crazy because I was watching other internet network marketers absolutely making mint, and they didn’t have to “chase” anyone like the old leaders still did.
Here are the 4 initial extremely important strategies that you may have overlooked that if you didn’t know, would make it impossible for you to build your business this year without some adjustments.
1. Slow Is Fast.
If you’re doing a spam post with before and after pics, and pictures of products, saying “lose weight, ask me how” and “private message me”, you’re going to continue to get no engagement from your network.
I see thousands and thousands of people out there with not even a single “like” on their Facebook pages!
Plus you are talking to the same 500 people everyday (our friends list on Facebook changes very little from day to day)…I am pretty sure they’ve seen my post the day before… HA HA!
However, if you come with value first, (with no strings attached), and go slow with people, (building a real relationship first), you’ll actually go fast because they’ll trust you – and people only buy from people they trust. The more value you provide, the more “credit” you build with people and your business will go fast!
People who have credibility, who provide value to people (their network), do very well.
All day every day, everyone is trying to be interesting on Facebook? … “Hey look at me, look at me, I’m interesting!!
So how do you be different?
You must be interested!
I want to know more about them!
How can I even help someone if I don’t know what they want, especially on a deeper level? and I mean what they really want, deep down!
You must ask questions when you post.
Show you care about THEM!
Become more interested in other people and you’ll be unusually successful.
If you don’t get to know them, then you only know what YOU want. And guess what? They don’t care what you want. Leading to…
2. “Selling” Vs. Enrollment (into something for their reasons not yours):
Even though we think the products/service of our company are the greatest things in the world known to man and “everyone needs it”, the fact is, it’s not interesting to them… just YET.
Saying, “Lose weight, ask me how” or “hurry join my team, private message me!” will not work any more. AT ALL. They have become immune.
Besides, people don’t sign up with your company, or a product. They sign up with you, and for the benefit for them, not the features.
Subconsciously we all know, it’s not a product or a service that can get us everything we want in our lives. It’s a person with value – a mentor, or people, that can teach us how to get the results we want in our life.
Your prospects don’t care about “what” it is, and subconsciously, they only care about why you’re doing it. And if your “why” relates with their “why”, (more training on building a why here) then they’ll get real with themselves, drop their walls, and most likely be interested. Because it’s on their agenda to get what they want!
In fact, if, instead of trying to selling them something, you can dig deep down deep into what they need and offer a solution based on those needs, wants, or desires they will be closed into your business before they even know what it is!
Then, if you build the skill to subconsciously anchor them into the system they must follow for the next 4 years to get to those needs, wants, or desires faster, then you won’t even be able to stop them!
Then they will be more like, “just show me what to do, and get out of the way”!
Now that’s enrollment!!!
And here’s a funny one…
3. Putting Your MLM Company Name In Your Facebook (or any of Your) Profiles: (Or putting your company name all over your car like they told me to!)
I thought having a business card filled with my company and product info was going to be good, but it was actually the exact opposite of good!
If you think that people are going to see your company name and hurry to get a hold of you, you’re going to be waiting for a very long time! Like Eternity!
It’s always better to brand yourself, for positioning and credibility, not your company. (More on that in the other posts.) Today, people immediately rush to Google and do their “research” instead of thinking to ask you for accurate information.
Your potential prospects also have a big sales filter. So if you just leave it to them, they’ll Google your company name and get their own idea, and that will be your best home business repellent!
If you leave your company name out there for them to look up themselves, your prospects may immediately find the negativity out there on the internet. You want them to make an educated decision, right??
They won’t see your value first. They’ll only see some company they think they’re not interested in being sold on.
A great thing you can do is have a Facebook business or fan page in your profile that provides tons of value, with great content. NOT “private message me” right away…
If you don’t have a business or fan page yet, then put something in your profile that makes them so curious it will drive them crazy, and they’ll want to know more!
This creates more of an “attraction to find out more”, rather than the repulsion. Never satisfy their curiosity or give them enough to they think they already “know” or else they won’t have to “show up” to learn more.

Network Marketing. The key word in there is: MARKETING!
It’s not called “chase everyone down, trying to convince them into your business, one by one” or maybe “post everybody on Facebook with your bright colored products fifteen times a day and wait for them to buy something” marketing! Ha!
Now, I know you may resist this like I wanted to at first, but invest a second into the moving to a higher level in your business, (and your sanity). I know what they told you, because they told me the same old school stuff that wasn’t the most efficient…
Come to every big meeting!
Do house parties. Don’t judge, prospect everyone! (Even though this business is not for everyone).
Write down 50 people. Use the scripts. Call them, one by one!
Chase your friends and family down, driving all over town talking to disinterested 9to5 skeptics that think their dead-end job is the greatest thing in the world, and way cooler than your network marketing business!
Make business cards and a Facebook fan page with your company name on ’em so you can spam everyone online, on the street, and on the coffee shop wall!
Throw mud on the wall with bad odds, and don’t worry about all the rejection! Those people are just negative dream-crushers!”
Oh and my favorite… “You’re just one person away from finding your runner”
You get my point.
If you’re like me, you would like to work at a higher level, especially with your Home Business.
I can tell you…done wrong, network marketing seriously will make you INSANE!
Which is why most people fail or quit, and why you may have so much attrition in your business.
Most people don’t think like the top 1%, so why try to drag them across the enrollment line?
You’ll find out later how much that slowed you down!
It certainly did for me.
This is so much better than trying to convince “Joe Shmoe” he can make a million dollars, when he’s just fine at his dead-end job, clicking the remote and watching T.V. on the weekends.
Most of my warmer network don’t really care about their health or their future!
They still think they will be able to retire and live off of social security. LOL!
I can’t tell you how awesome it is to work with sharp, self-motivated go-getters who have already read “Rich Dad Poor Dad” and have desire for bigger and better things.
I was so burnt out on working way too hard, dragging people over the line, kicking and screaming to have them quit a week later because this is work and you actually have to do something without someone making you.
So after I came out my comfort zone and adapted to this specialized online marketing, my home business started to grow faster! (and it is fun again!)
It took a lot of learning, but just ask yourself: What would you be willing to learn, so you can feel excited when you check your email in the morning to find leads of interested people, who are already motivated to Find Out More?
What about simply going out without having to feel like your hunting people…gotta get those names and numbers to have prospects.
With a more efficient kind of marketing, you’ll generate 24-7 income.
You will also establish the credibility you need, so people are listening when you speak, and even be able to generate multiple streams of income from your own site, while you sleep, from anywhere in the world, with a laptop…
