How to Create Your Why the Right Way, So You Don’t Send Your Prospects Running for the Door
You’re sitting down with a potential business partner. You NAILED the invite so they are excited to learn from you. You are dressed to perfection… hair is perfect, smile is on point. Then you start your presentation.
“You kill it!” I mean KILL it!
You are on your game!
You said every product right.
You had all your facts straight.
You were so AMAZING!!!… and then you look over at you prospect and they are running for the door…
I’m just going to say that I’m pretty sure you didn’t get anywhere.
You were doing the actions that you were taught by your upline but you were not connecting.
It is a lot like a dog being tied to the back of the car.
Your running but you’re getting dragged and eventually you end up a dead dog!
How do I know this?.. LOL!
I have done it!
More than I would like to admit.
It is way easier to hide behind facts, like how great your company is, or the products, or anything, besides getting vunerable with others.
Net “WORK” Marketing… The Key Word Here is “WORK”!
When I had my first business launch party, my mentor said “OK this is how we do this…
You’re going to get up and welcome everyone, tell your story, then edify, and introduce me, I will handle it from there”.
First of all, I almost puked.
I had packed the house with my closest friends.
(Let me set the stage for you)…I HATE talking in front of others about myself. I can teach and spit facts at you all day long, but if I have to get personal, at all, I will (and still) AVOID this at all cost.
I hold my feelings in.
I bury them deep.
And it’s all based out of fear.
What will they think of me?
Am I good enough?
What if I say something stupid?
Oh yeah…this outgoing, joyful, fun-loving person (who has taught children and adults of all ages) has fears of talking and presenting in front of people when it comes to talking about myself.
What can I say…you gotta work with what you have, right?
SO…back to the story…ha…
I had nothing prepared.
I was new.
I didn’t have a story.
What did I know?
This gal that was here to present had been doing this a couple months longer than me. She had it all together and was cool, calm, and collected.
Why did she want me to talk?
What am I supposed to say to them?
Those that I hold so dear.
So I basically sucked it up and went for it.
I stood in front of the room with my closet friends staring at me and started with my ”why”.
It was HORRIBLE!!
I said what I was before Network Marketing.
My why at the time, which was to make a crap ton of money… Lol.
I edified her and sat down.
I was still shaking when the meeting ended.
When I was taught later, that I must have a “compelling story”, I blew it off.
I thought “whatever”. These people I was talking to do not give a rip about why I am doing this or “my story”.
I didn’t take it serious, and I definitely didn’t know how to take that and use it for branding and value online.
I was thinking my company and the products were more important…when they are not.
The important thing (and the difference) is YOU.
I can tell you, this was soooo hard for me.
To make a crap ton of money… right?
I don’t care about money… that is not why I get out of bed everyday.
Why network marketing?
Why take time away from the ones you love to build this?
Why put time and effort into building a business?
What am I doing this for?
Money dictates what we do every day.
We have to continue to create that almighty dollar to live.
Do the dance get the peanut.
If you are like me, I did not realize this at first, however, people don’t really care about “what you have to sell”.
I didn’t know.
I thought that they would see it the way I did!
What I figured out is that people relate to stories and they make emotional decisions based on their needs, wants, and desires.
The rational decisions don’t come until later, so showing them facts and figures doesn’t really work.
I promise, I tried it A LOT!!
They may buy something, but they probably will not join you in your business.
The reality is people do not want to be sold, they like to buy when it is their idea.
They don’t care about your agenda or what you have to sell.
They only care about their own needs, wants, and desires, and if you want people to join you, then you get really good at telling stories, (especially your own, to gain trust) in a way that taps into their own needs, wants, and desires.
This also goes for all online strategies.
The flashy colors and “before and after” pics will work to a certain point, but it will actually backfire long term.
After a while, when people have seen it over and over again, they think they “already know what you have”, and they start to avoid you online and off.
Here is what I have discovered…when you come with your story that resonates, accompanied with tons of VALUE, they are attracted to join you and this is WAY more fun than convincing, pulling, or pushing them to buy or enroll.

This is the exact system that I used to go from struggling network marketer to getting 10 to 15 leads per day, making money, and becoming a happy network marketer.
How To Enroll People By Sharing Your Story vs. Trying To Convince, Sell Or Persuade Them On What You Think Is A Great Idea
When I figured this out my business grew faster and faster.
It is a lot of fun when you come from “servant” mentality than from “what I can get from others” mentality.
Telling your story is the difference in trying to sell, convince, or persuade them and enrollment into your bigger purpose.
When you have the agenda of selling someone something or “getting” them, you are trying to get them to do what you want them to do for your reasons.
This strategy never works.
When you get good at going into your story, you can learn to inspire them to do what you want them to do, but for their reasons!
Now that you understand the Why your “Story” is so important, let’s get to the how.
Like I shared earlier, your prospects do not care what you are selling or doing.
If you can communicate with them how your story relates to their story, they will be enrolling into your business before they even know what it is.
Make sure your story will relate with other people’s challenges and desires.
Here are the simple steps at creating your story.
- Your background. What you did before?
- What you disliked about it. Dig into the pain, get specific. Why were you looking for something else?
- The solution you found. Who showed you? What caught your attention or stood out for you?
- How you feel about the future and what you are about to do? create? change with the vehicle you have found.
For Example: My name is Jenny Lincoln. I was a teacher turned to Corporate America, tied to the billable hour, living paycheck to paycheck and trying to pay off all my debt. I was tired of living this way and going to a job that I did not like. I didn’t like that I was tied to a chair for 8 hours a day, commuted an hour each way to this job, and working in a toxic environment. I wanted to make more money to get further ahead, be able to quit this job so I could own my own schedule, and fulfill my dreams. Which is exactly what I found.
My friend’s daughter introduced me to this wonderful world of network marketing (or company name). She told me how it was replacing her teacher’s income. I immediately recognized this was a way to build my exit strategy from Corporate America and getting the life I really wanted.
I also figured out that this was the leverage I was looking for. I do the work once and get paid over and over. I am so glad I took the time to listen and jump in all the way. In a few short months, I had hit 4 figures.
I’m excited about continuing to grow professionally, creating a lifestyle I’ve always dreamed about, paying off all my debt, having more time freedom, and giving back more to causes I care about. This residual income is something that continues to pay me. I can work and get paid anywhere in the world 24/7, 365 days a year with a phone and a laptop. And even more exciting is helping you change your life.
What is the difference between amateurs and professionals?
Amateurs practice until they get it right.
Tell your story to everyone.
Heck, tell it to yourself.
If I call you in the middle of the night, you better be able to tell me your story.
He!He! send me your number if you want to practice. 😉
If you want to make serious money, you will get really good at telling stories.
Listen to other leaders stories.
Listen to how they articulate the story.
You need to have passion in your story and they can tell if you don’t believe what you saying, again practice!
“Be so good they can’t ignore you” -Steve Martin
Finding the solutions to your pain/problems, you become valuable to others.
Jumping into your story can be the flawless transition into inviting your prospects to take a look.
If you are someone that usually says too much in the invitation, use your story as a go to… instead of presenting at the invite, (side note) shorten your story down for this.
No company name here and no products.
NEVER give the PRESENTATION at the INVITATION! If you go too far into your “details”, you will satisfy their curiosity, and then they won’t ever have to show up to look at any information because already “know” what you’re going to say!
You will become a master inviter by mastering your story.
Then control yourself, and set an appointment to talk about next steps (or to chat with your business partners) and then DROP the subject and go back to being interested in them!
Continue to talk about them and their “story”!
I am excited to see your business grow and for you to become a master at YOUR STORY!, because nobody can do it like you!
If you are really serious about getting your story out there in front of hundreds of thousands of interested prospects, then you can learn to market your business online more effectively like I did.

Learning a few new simple strategies immediately took my home business from fishing in the pond to fishing in the Ocean, and yes, I’m saying…
Instead of driving across town to talk to disinterested 9 to 5 coin operated peeps, one by one, like I used to do, wasting tons of time, energy, and money on childcare, you can actually brand yourself online and work from home with your laptop.
Generating prospects and income for your home business from your home.
Happy Story Telling!
